SAFE + SOUND PROTOCOL
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a polyagal-informed auditory intervention that supports regulation, safety, and connection. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and grounded in Polyvagal Theory, SSP helps calm the nervous system and improve the brain’s ability to accurately detect safety in both the environment and relationships.
SSP uses specially filtered prosodic vocal music to train the middle ear muscles to better tune into the frequencies of human speech. When speech is perceived as safe and clear, the nervous system gains greater access to social engagement, emotional regulation, and resilience—often enhancing communication and therapeutic progress.
While SSP is often described as a five-hour listening program, it is not always completed over five consecutive days. At Kelley Counseling & Wellness, SSP includes consultation and ongoing support with a licensed, SSP-certified therapist and a carefully curated protocol tailored to each individual. Sessions may be shorter, include breaks, or be spaced out to prioritize safety and progress. When appropriate, measured assessments are used to track outcomes. SSP is offered in office or virtually to support comfort, safety, and accessibility.
