Sandtray Play Therapy

Picture
What Is Sandtray Play Therapy?Sandtray Play Therapy is a powerful, creative approach that helps children, teens, and even adults express what words often cannot. Using a tray of sand and a wide variety of miniature figures, clients create scenes or “worlds” that reflect their inner thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
This gentle, nonverbal process allows the unconscious to come forward in a safe and symbolic way. Instead of having to explain difficult emotions or past experiences, clients can show them through the images they create. The therapist then supports the client in exploring and making meaning from what emerges.
Why Sandtray Therapy Works
  • Safe Expression: The sandtray becomes a contained space where clients can express emotions they may not yet feel ready to talk about.
  • Healing Through Symbols: Miniatures—such as people, animals, buildings, or natural elements—become metaphors for the client’s inner world.
  • Mind-Body Connection: The tactile experience of working with sand can calm the nervous system and reduce stress.
  • Accessible for All Ages: While especially effective with children, sandtray therapy also supports teens and adults who may struggle to put experiences into words.
Benefits of Sandtray Play Therapy
  • Encourages emotional regulation and resilience
  • Helps process trauma, grief, or difficult life changes
  • Supports problem-solving, self-awareness, and self-expression
  • Creates a safe and empowering space for healing
